  3. May 21, 2013  I have a Remington Model 742 30-06 semi auto rifle serial # XXXXX and am unable to find the month and year of manufacture. The value also in like new condition. The value also in like new condition. It belonged to my father and I believe he got it in the early 60es.

The Remington Woodsmaster Model 740 is a semi-automatic rifle manufactured by Remington Arms between 1955 and 1959.[1] The rifle had a 22-inch barrel and a four-round magazine.[1] The original calibers were 30-06 and .308, but calibers .244 and .280 were made available subsequently. The blued metal barreled action was mounted in a walnut stock. This model was succeeded by the Remington Model 742 in 1960 and the Remington Model 7400 in 1980.[2]

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC. ILION, N.Y. / MADE IN U.S.A. PATENT NUMBER- 2,747,343”, “.30-06 SPRG”, 'RZ' date code, '94' and with an inspector mark. The left side of the receiver is marked “Remington / A7101600” and “Woodsmaster / MODEL 742”. The right side of the barrel is marked with an ovalled “R.E.P.” and two inspection marks.
Barrel Length: 22”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to a serrated, ramped base screwed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a 'U'-notch, windage adjustable in a base which is itself mounted to a ramped base allowing for elevation adjustment. The ramped base is screwed to the rear of the barrel. The receiver is drilled and tapped wtih see-through rings holding an Armsport 3-9x40 Wide Angle scope with duplex reticle. The glass is fairly clear with some scatttered light marks and wear in the body, in about Very Good condition. The scope is not mounted square to the rifle.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, checkered black plastic Remington buttplate, steel nosecap with sling stud and sling stud mounted in the belly. The grip cap is missing. The stocks have scattered light compressions, drag lines and scuffs. There is a thin crack at the right vent-hole on the forend. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has well defined checkering with light wear at the heel, in about Very Good-Fine condition. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 0.6.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The barrel and receiver have some scattered spots of very light surface oxidation with the receiver also showing some very light scattered freckling. The receiver has some thinning finish at the edges of the magazine well and a few light marks. The pin heads have thinning finish but are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. This rifle has a magazine release at the right front of the trigger guard and a slide release near the bottom of the magazine on its left side. It also has a cross-bolt safety behind the trigger. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a single blued 4-round magazine marked “30-06' in rectangle on the right. The magazine has a blued steel follower. The magazine shows thinning finish on the feed lips and light operational wear. The magazine is in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Our Assessment: This is a Remington Woodsmaster Model 742 semi-auto rifle chambered in .30-06 Sprinfield. It has a pistol grip stock with checkering and sling studs, and an Armsport 3-9X scope mounted on the receiver with see-through rings. The .30-06 is a classic cartridge which needs no introduction, perhaps the most popular deer cartridge in America. The bore is great and there is no reason to think that with the proper care that this rifle won’t last another lifetime. Please see our photos and good luck!

Please include a copy of your dealer’s license with payment or faxed/emailed separately. We will need CFLC numbers for CA FFL’s to ship a firearm within California. We are FFL dealers and comply with all Federal, State and Local laws.
We always combine on shipping to save you as much as we can. You can generally assume it will be full shipping charge on the first item, 1/2 on the second, 1/3 on the third, etc. Exceptions only arise when the items are going to different locations (different licenses), or when they are exceptionally large, heavy or valuable and cannot be combined.
